The annual conference on the Use of R in Official Statistics will be organized as a virtual event, on 6-8 December 2022.
Over the last two decades R has become the lingua franca for statisticians, methodologists and data scientists worldwide. The reasons why the official statistics community is rapidly embracing R are clear: it has an active worldwide community of users, there is wide support from the industry and it combines a vast amount of functionalities for data preparation, methodology, visualization and application building. Moreover, R-based software is exchanged through strictly enforced technical standards: “R is probably the most thoroughly validated statistics software on Earth.” – Uwe Ligges, CRAN maintainer (useR!2017).
Finally, R is a free (libre) Open Source software product, making it an ideal environment for sharing, collaboration and industrialising official statistics.
The annual event “use of R in Official Statistics” started as a local conference at the Statistical Office of Romania in 2013, with the first international edition being held at that same office in 2014. In 2018, Statistics Netherlands hosted the sixth edition of this event, which brought together official statisticians, scientists, and prominent members of the R community to share ideas on using and developing R tools in the area of official statistics.
In 2020, was Statistics Austria’s turn to host the conference, for the first time being a virtual event. In 2021, uRos was hosted by its home country and institution - Romanian National Statistics Institute.
Celebrating a decade of uRos events. In 2022, we are delighted to announce that the 10th uRos, the first non-European uRos, will be hosted by Statistics Canada, as a virtual event.
Statistics Canada produces statistics that help Canadians better
understand their country—its population, resources, economy, society and
culture. In addition to conducting a Census every five years, there are
about 350 active surveys on virtually all aspects of Canadian
life.
Statistics Canada has been using R since 2017, starting for research
projects and more recently has brought R into the production of official
statistics. R is used throughout the agency with an ever growing
community support network driving the path forward. Statistics Canada is
on a modernization journey leveraging cloud technology, data science
techniques and embracing R as one of the vital open source tools for
producing official statistics.

Eric Kolaczyk is a Professor in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics at McGill University, where he is also director of the Computational and Data Systems Initiative. In addition to his research and teaching on the topic, he has written several books on statistics and networks, including Statistical Analysis of Network Data in R with co-author Gabor Csardi (author of the igraph R package) in the Springer Use R! series.
“Statistical analysis of network data – a gentle introduction”
Abstract: Among the many and varied data types available in the
current digital age is a rich spectrum of network data, ranging from
survey-based friendship networks to networks of human mobility. Our
understanding of the potential impact of such data on official
statistics, and how best they can be integrated with more traditional
data, is arguably still in the early stages. In this talk, I will give a
gentle introduction to some fundamentals of the statistical analysis of
network data, largely through the lens of the R package igraph and
several other complementary packages.
Julia Silge is a data scientist and software engineer at RStudio PBC where she works on open source modeling tools. She is an author, an international keynote speaker, and a real-world practitioner focusing on data analysis and machine learning. Julia loves text analysis, making beautiful charts, and communicating about technical topics with diverse audiences.
“Data visualization for machine learning practitioners”
Abstract: Visual representations of data inform how machine learning
practitioners think, understand, and decide. Before charts are ever used
for outward communication about a ML system, they are used by the system
designers and operators themselves as a tool to make better modeling
choices. Practitioners use visualization, from very familiar statistical
graphics to creative and less standard plots, at the points of most
important human decisions when other ways to validate those decisions
can be difficult. Visualization approaches are used to understand both
the data that serves as input for machine learning and the models that
practitioners create. In this talk, learn about the process of building
a ML model in the real world, how and when practitioners use
visualization to make more effective choices, and considerations for ML
visualization tooling.

We are cordially inviting you to submit papers to and attend the International Conference The Use of R in Official Statistics – uRos2022 until 16th of September 2022.
There will be two kind of presentations: “regular presentations” with roughly 15 minutes time slots and “lighting presentations” with 5 minutes time slots and automatic cycling through the slides. Please indicate your preference, but the scientific committee will finally assign the presentations into the two categories.
The purpose of the conference is to provide a public forum for researchers from academia and institutes of official (government) statistics to present, exchange ideas and discuss developments in state-of-the-art statistical software commonly used in applied economics and statistics. The most focused debates are expected to be on the use of R in Official Statistics.
The topics covered by the conference are the following:
The participants are kindly asked to submit the abstract via e-mail to: urosconf [at] gmail.com preferably as plain text or Word or PDF, there is no template for the abstract submission.
